Rio Grande Valley
Wastewater treatment plants generate more than treated water. They also produce waste that may contain energy that can be captured and put to use.
Through the Waste to CLEAN Fuels for Decarbonizing Transportation in the Rio Grande Valley (CLEAN-RGV) project, HARC is evaluating how wastewater treatment plant waste in the Lower Rio Grande Valley could be converted into fuels for public transportation and other heavy-duty vehicles.
With support from the U.S. Department of Energy, HARC and its regional partners will assess commercially available technologies and identify opportunities to connect wastewater treatment facilities with transportation systems that could use the resulting fuels.
The goal is to determine where waste-to-fuel approaches are technically and economically feasible while developing solutions that can support cleaner transportation, reduce emissions and strengthen regional resilience.
