CEER hosted the Northeast Community meeting on February 18 at 6pm in person at the Carl Walker, Jr. Multipurpose Center at 4300 Noble St., Houston, TX 77020.

The meeting focused on disaster preparedness and highlighted community members’ stories of resilience for Black Climate Week. Attendees discussed how they prepare their homes and how they’d like to see their communities more prepared.

HARC staff provided weatherization kits to each household to help them prepare their homes for extreme weather and save energy in the process. Weatherization kits included:

  • – carbon monoxide monitors to help find gas leaks and other sources of harmful carbon monoxide,
  • – LED lightbulbs that are much more efficient than incandescent bulbs,
  • – a solar battery that charges from the sun and stores energy for you to charge your phone or other devices. It comes with an emergency whistle and a flashlight, and
  • – weatherstripping for doors, tape for windows, and caulk and a caulk gun to seal cracks. All of these stop leaks and keep the heat inside in the winter and outside in the summe.
