HARC Remembers Dr. Jurgen Schmandt

Dr. Jurgen Schmandt, 1929-2023

It is with a heavy heart that HARC announces the passing of Dr. Jurgen Schmandt, the former director of the Mitchell Center for Sustainable Development at HARC, and a HARC Distinguished Fellow.

Dr. Schmandt was often referred to as a force to be reckoned with by his family, students, and colleagues, and was indeed a driving force behind the success of a number of initiatives throughout his lifetime. He earned his doctorate in political philosophy from the University of Bonn in Germany. He was an expert in sustainable development, climate change, science and technology policy, and water policy. He was a founding faculty member and professor emeritus at the Lyndon Baines Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas, Austin, and was also a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Dr. Schmandt authored, co-authored, or edited several books on global warming and sustainability. He was also the author of George P. Mitchell and the Idea of Sustainability, a landmark publication on HARC’s founder.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, his three children and their spouses, his seven grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

HARC celebrates the life and service of Dr. Jurgen Schmandt. He will be deeply missed.
