Houston and Hurricane Harvey: a call to action
HARC researchers Stephanie Glenn, Marina Badoian-Kriticos and Gavin Dillingham contributed to a recent report published by reinsurance firm Zurich RE. The report was written by ISET with contributions from experts across the region discussing the significant negative impacts Hurricane Harvey had on Houston and the Gulf Coast’s economy, communities and natural environment. The report also provided a robust list of recommended actions that the region must take to reduce risk and ensure the Houston region remains a robust and dynamic place to live and work.
The trio of HARC researchers provided content on both the negative impacts of Harvey, as well as the solutions that helped to inform the final recommendations. Some of these solutions look to green infrastructure and low impact development to reduce future flooding risk. Innovative funding mechanisms to pay for the new, more resilient infrastructure was also shared.
